LGBT Investors Express Confidence About Retirement Goals ...

SAN FRANCISCO, May 30, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) ?
Investors are faced with complex challenges when it comes to retirement,
including: how to save enough to feel comfortable, where to invest
retirement savings, understanding and creating retirement income
options, and when and where to retire. LGBT investors (lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender) face these same challenges as well as several
unique ones, including those stemming from a lack of federal marriage
and inheritance rights.

Yet in a recent nationwide Wells Fargo retirement survey, LGBT
non-retirees reported a higher level of confidence in their retirement
savings, compared to the general population. In the survey, 61% of LGBT
non-retirees felt confident they would have enough saved by the time
they retire to live the lifestyle they want throughout their retirement,
significantly higher than 53% cited by the general population. Despite
this confidence, over a third (36%) of LGBT non-retirees expect they
will need to work during retirement in order to afford their lifestyle
(only slightly lower than the 41% of the general population).

The Accredited Domestic Partnership Advisor (ADPA) program was created,
through a partnership with the College for Financial Planning, to
educate advisors about the unique needs and financial considerations of
domestic partners. Financial advisors who earn this designation are
well-equipped to work with domestic partners and lesbian, gay, bisexual,
and transgender (LGBT) clients to develop a thoughtful approach to
meeting their financial goals. Wells Fargo was the first in the industry
to create this program and today has more than 100 ADPA-certified
financial advisors nationwide.

Approximately one in ten LGBT respondents have heard of ADPAs ?
financial advisors with training in financial and retirement planning
specifically for LGBT domestic partners. Upon hearing a description of
ADPA advisor training and designation, most gay men (60%) and lesbians
(72%) say these credentials are important to them when working with a
financial advisor.

?Each investor has different priorities, needs, and life goals, and
domestic partners and same-sex couples often have added concerns and
questions about their unique financial situation,? said Kyle Young,
Financial Advisor and Vice-President, Investment Officer for Wells Fargo
Advisors. ?It?s especially important for LGBT investors to find
financial advisors who are acutely aware of the challenges, laws, and
regulations that impact their investment planning needs. This additional
knowledge affords clients encouragement in knowing that their needs will
be heard, understood, and thoughtfully explored.?

The median amount LGBT non-retirees have saved for retirement is only
17% of what they believe they actually need. LGBT non-retirees believe
they will need to save at least $900,000 in order to retire, and have
saved on average about $150,000. And despite this need to save more for
retirement, three out of five (62%) of non-retired LGBT?s surveyed have
not increased their retirement savings allocation in the past year.

More than half (54%) of all LGBT respondents cite being recognized as
equal citizens by society and the law as the most important reason for
legalizing gay marriage. One in five (19%) say that having legal rights
and medical decision-making on behalf of one?s partner is most
important. Only 7% said legalizing gay marriage was not important to
them.

LGBT respondents overwhelmingly reported they would find value in
information and advice on investing and preparing for retirement.
Additionally, only about a quarter of the LGBT respondents currently had
a detailed written plan for their finances in retirement.

online survey between December 2nd and December 18, 2011 among adults
ages 25-75 who identified themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or
transgender (LGBT, n=505). Comparisons were made to a similar national

What has our society done to us?

Has Hollywood and advertising caused us to focus on looks rather than depth, and instant gratification rather than virtue and self-control?? Have we become caught up with priorities that may bring status and recognition while true and lasting fulfillment are eluded because we have not focused on selfless service?? If only we could place our causes and priorities under a type of magnifying glass that could clearly project the future outcome of our time and efforts.? We could then examine whether our time commitments are helping us reach the top of the mountain we are really wanting to reach.

Recently I read an article entitled ?The Bride Who was Groomed for a Career? by Lea Singh.? What an interesting viewpoint on feminism.? In years past I have rubbed shoulders with many women who believe that first and foremost they should prepare for a fulfilling career. ?These women eventually want marriage and family too, but they have been so focused on priorities dictated by secularism and feminism that other concerns are given only a side-glance.

Several years ago my husband and I became good friends with a fortyish-age woman who had made quite a career for herself in the fashion world.? Her name and photo were regulars in some of the more exclusive New York magazines. She once told us that she lived the life of ?The Devil Wears Prada.? In fact she had worked closely with the woman who inspired the above-mentioned movie.? She said that her schedule required that a sleeping bag be kept in one of her office drawers, and evening gowns were kept in her office closet.? There were many weeks where her office WAS her home, and she loved the excitement and lure of all the glitz and recognition!? That is she loved it until she realized that with this kind of pace she would never find serious prospects for marriage. As she neared her 40^th birthday, she made a courageous decision.? She actually quit her job and began writing a book.? Her time became her own, and amazingly she was married within a year. The last I heard she had two small children, and she was finally living the life she really wanted all along.

I?m not at all implying that women should not attend college and get a degree. Any and all education received gives confidence and perspective.? It can inspire and empower?.making any woman a better companion and mother.

I found Lea Singh?s viewpoint extremely interesting. The following is taken from Ms. Singh?s article:

I wish that as I was growing up, the role of wife and mother had been more fully present as a respectable and important option that also needs time and training, not just an afterthought that automatically tacks on to a career. Much of the skill set I acquired in university is not very useful in the home. Although I know how to write legal briefs, I wish I knew how to sew, play family songs on the piano and cook without a cookbook, and even that I was more familiar with caring for little ones and for a busy household. All the chores I was protected from in order to enable me to study as I was growing up ? maybe I should have done them after all, including some babysitting. I want to give these experiences to my daughter, so that she will be better equipped not just for a career, but also for motherhood.

I even wish ? and this is sure to get some hair frizzed ? that it had been explained to me that a high-flying career does not go well with family life. Men and women really are different. When the man gets married, it is just a sweet step in the direction of all his life dreams. He can climb up the career ladder and still be a good father to his nine kids. He will get a deep sense of meaning and fulfillment from providing for his family.

But where feminism has confused women, it has made us dream that we are the same as men. Men are not mothers, and children don?t need them in the same way as they will inevitably need us. So if we want to have children, we can?t pretend to be men in our career plans and aspirations. Do we really want to have someone else caring for our homes and our children? It does not have to be that way. We need to embrace a model of life success that is less career-oriented and more family-centered. Giving of oneself to others, while it comes without diplomas, year-end bonuses and frequent-flyer miles, is just as worthy and important as building up one?s own career.

Myanmar banking's new "wow" factor - ATMs

YANGON (Reuters) - As Myanmar opens up after five decades of military rule, a country run on cash is finding a new alternative: plastic.

Private banks in Myanmar have begun rolling out automated teller machines in recent weeks, revolutionary in a country where people often haul sacks and suitcases of cash to banks.

And more ambitious plans are in the works.

"It's fantastic, so convenient," Naing Lin Oo, a 26-year-old computer engineer, said after withdrawing about 120,000 kyat ($143) one recent afternoon.

"It would be good to see more of these," he added, pointing to a two-month-old blue-and-yellow ATM run by Co-Operative Bank, one of Myanmar's 13 private banks.

That's about to happen: the central bank is preparing to launch a new nationwide ATM network within two months and is in talks with Visa International's Plus and MasterCard International's Cirrus to introduce international banking within six months to a year, part of sweeping reforms in the former British colony, also known as Burma.

Myanmar's banking system is among the world's most antiquated, crippled by years of sanctions and disastrous socialist policies. Moving funds abroad often requires help from ancient "hawala" underground money-transfer agents.

Over the past two months, however, private banks have introduced basic electronic banking - with limits. ATM machines, for instance, cannot be shared between rival banks, and many are offline. Although U.S. and European sanctions have been suspended, local banks still cannot connect internationally.

"Our payment system is still quite simple. It's mostly based on cash," Maung Maung Win, one of two Central Bank of Myanmar deputy governors, said in an interview in the commercial capital Yangon. "Even some of the big companies or our government departments like to use cash."

Within two months, he said, a new department within the central bank, the Myanmar Payment Union, will introduce a new debit-card network allowing banks to share ATM machines and offer a wider array of services, among the biggest changes in the financial sector since the managed float of the kyat on April 2.

That will be followed by a second phase of international services by the middle of next year, or possibly as soon as six months, he added. The timing depends on the execution of Washington's decision this month to suspend sanctions.

"WE'RE WAITING"

Since 1988, when the former military junta violently cracked down on student protesters, the United States has imposed what it calls "a web of overlapping sanctions". This was done through five laws and four presidential documents.

On May 17, the Obama administration announced it would ease those restrictions, allowing U.S. investments and financial services in Myanmar for the first time in decades. This was in recognition of dramatic political changes.

But Washington only "suspended" sanctions, instead of lifting them, to ensure no backtracking on human rights. The laws remain on the books.

U.S. businesses wanting to do business in Myanmar, including banks, must apply to Washington for a "general license", a step that Myanmar's central bank expects could take weeks or even months.

"We're waiting," said Maung Maung Win.

As a result, Western financial services are still non-existent in Myanmar and international credit and debit cards remain off limits - a frequent source of irritation for tourists and business executives now descending on the country.

The restrictions also prohibit local banks from moving money to U.S. and European bank networks ? effectively freezing Myanmar out of global banking.

Anticipating changes, Myanmar's central bank has opened discussions with MasterCard and Visa, said Maung Maung Win.

"From our side we are willing to start as soon as possible," he said, adding the central bank wanted to connect to the international network ahead of the 2013 Southeast Asian Games, due to open late next year in Myanmar's capital, Naypyitaw.

MasterCard is looking at opportunities in Myanmar, said Matthew Driver, division president for Southeast Asia at MasterCard Worldwide.

"Electronic payments will be crucial in helping Myanmar connect to the global economy, facilitating business activity, and creating a better life for its citizens through financial inclusion," he said in a statement e-mailed to Reuters.

Local banking was not always so fraught.

Dozens of local and foreign banks thrived in the 1950s, but the industry withered after a 1962 military coup introduced a disastrous "Burmese Way to Socialism" and sweeping nationalization.

In 1988, the country's former military rulers re-introduced a market economy. Soon after, in 1992, private banks were allowed. Foreign banks began opening representative offices, poised for a day when they could do business in the resource-rich country of about 60 million people.

In 2003, shady money-lending practices caught up with the banking sector, sparking a crisis exacerbated by inept decision-making. Three banks collapsed.

Accusations of money laundering have since begun to fade but other problems are entrenched, including restrictions that prevent foreign banks from doing little more than research at representative offices. Currently, 17 foreign banks maintain such offices, said the central bank.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, that number peaked at around 40. In recent weeks, it has started to rise again.

Asked which banks were most keen to enter Myanmar, Maung Maung Win said Japanese banks led the pack, including Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd and Sumitomo Corp, followed by Singapore's United Overseas Bank Ltd, DBS Group Holdings Ltd and Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp Ltd, and then Malaysia's CIMB Group Holdings Bhd. Banks from Vietnam, China and the United States also expressed strong interest, he added.

He said foreign banks might be allowed to open joint ventures or subsidiaries as early as next year and no later than 2015, pending new foreign direct investment laws and the outcome of deliberations at Myanmar's Finance Ministry, which oversees the central bank.

In the meantime, domestic banks are rushing to roll out services ahead of foreign competition.

Irrawaddy Bank, owned by local tycoon Zaw Zaw's Max Myanmar conglomerate, is less than two years old but aims to double in size to 45 branches and 1,500 staff next year from about 20 branches and 970 staff now, Zaw Zaw said in an interview.

Some have started online bill payments and domestic remittances, adding to the thrill for card-holders such as Naing Lin Oo, who uses ATMs about twice a month.

"It is far easier than using cash," he said outside Yangon's second-largest shopping plaza, itself a new phenomenon, open for just two months. "But we really need to see more of these," he said.

Robot lifeguards hit the beach in time for summer

Just in time for the summer season, so-called robot lifeguards are hitting the beach on both coasts of the U.S.

?E.M.I.L.Y. is a means to assist lifeguards and first responder who respond to drowning victims,? Bob Lautrup, the robot?s co-inventor and president of Hydonalix told me Monday.

?It is a tool, not a replacement, but it is a way to deliver floatation to a drowning victim at a long distance.??

The lifeguards are essentially remote-controlled jet-ski-like buoys that can reach and stabilize victims as they wait for a human rescue.

The buoy can travel at speeds up 25 miles per hour (any faster and it would be considered a projectile) and will stay afloat with?up to?four people hanging on to it.?

E.M.I.L.Y. stands for Emergency Integrated Lifesaving Lanyard. Lautrup?s company Hydronalix unveiled the concept two and a half years ago and recently starting selling commercial versions.

The Los Angeles County Lifeguards at Zuma Beach in Malibu helped improve the design of the prototype and are the first to put the $10,000 tool to use. (Check NBC Los Angeles? ?video of it ?in action.)

E.M.I.L.Y. is also being deployed in Depot Bay, Oregon and Westerly, Rhode Island, noted Lautrup.

Since E.M.I.L.Y.?s unveiling, it has gained safety features such as a screen on the intake valve of the jet pump to prevent little kids? fingers and long hair from getting sucked into the machinery.

"That took us a little bit of effort to make sure that we did it in a way which met safety objectives buy also in a way that did not wipe out the efficiency of the jet pump," Lautrup noted.

They?ve also added hand loops on the side to make it easier for victims to hold on as they wait for a rescue and outfitted some versions with a rope so that it can be pulled in to shore.

Future versions may come with the option of a sonar scanner to look for objects and people trapped below the surface.

While E.M.I.L.Y. isn?t a replacement for human lifeguards, it is a welcome addition to the beach and nice to see a friendly-robot like technology out to save human lives, not to destroy them.

Spring revival for America's housing market

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Kate Carpenter and her husband waited for two years before sensing the time was right to look to buy a home in the suburbs of New York.

"This is the first time homes are at an affordable point," said the freelance writer, 35.

She hopes to move her two young daughters out of their rented New York City apartment soon, taking advantage of record low mortgage rates and signs the slump is over.

Six years after the housing market began its slide, dragging the U.S. economy into recession, this year's spring season -- traditionally the busiest period for home sales -- is shaping up to be the strongest since the crash.

Sales rose more than 10 percent in April from a year earlier and may end the year up by as much as 13 percent, according to the National Association of Realtors.

Prices, which plunged by a third from 2006 according to some measures, are rising in some cities. Realtors report bidding wars, albeit more modest ones than during the bubble years, and buyers are snapping up homes much more quickly than only a few weeks ago.

"We have more buyers than we have houses to sell," said April Bolin, a realtor in Riverside, California, considered one of the epicenters of the U.S. housing crash.

"We have multiple bids all the time. I recently sold a property that had 10 offers in three days," Bolin said.

A reminder of how damaged the market remains: That contested condominium sold for the asking price of $173,000, less than half of what it fetched at the peak of the bubble.

Even if existing home sales this year touch 4.8 million, the top end of the NAR's forecasts, that compares with more than 7 million in 2005, before the crash.

"We're guardedly optimistic," said Ron Phipps, a broker at Phipps Realty in Warwick, Rhode Island, a state hit hard by the 2007-09 recession. "We've seen some really good signs. We just want them to be sustained."

WORKING OFF THE OVERSUPPLY

One of the most significant signs of recovery is the fall in the bloated inventory of homes on the market. Nationally, it has fallen to about six-months' supply, usually considered a healthy market, down from more than nine months in April of last year.

Agents attribute some of the quick drawdown to a broadening of the kind of buyers getting into the market - homeowners looking to upgrade, first-time purchasers and retirees as well as the cash investors who ventured in earlier and growing numbers of Wall Street funds betting on juicy rental returns.

Some of the cities looking at a potential inventory shortage were among those hardest hit by the crisis, including Phoenix and Miami, because investors have already swooped on many homes. In Sacramento, California, supply has shrunk to just 1.1 months' worth, according to data firm RealtyTrac.

"We don't have a lot of product, and we have a lot of eager buyers," said Donna Evers, an owner of Evers & Company, a real estate company in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, one of the hottest spots in the recovery so far.

A five-bedroom house that needed a lot of renovation drew 11 offers within three days and eventually sold for $250,000 over the asking price at $1,350,000, Evers said.

"Prices are building pretty fast," said the 30-year veteran of the U.S. property market.

The market still faces big obstacles, not least a large number of homeowners whose properties are worth less than their mortgages or who are behind on their payments. In March, data firm CoreLogic estimated that for every two homes sold, there is one that could yet be foreclosed.

A setback in the still fragile U.S. economic recovery could also scare away potential buyers.

MORTGAGE LENDING STILL TIGHT

Another risk to the recovery: Despite record low interest rates, lending conditions remain very tight for anyone who cannot show a high credit score and satisfy often highly detailed demands from banks for proof of their financial standing.

"The cruel irony is that during the housing boom, we were giving mortgages to anybody with a pulse," said Guy Cecala, publisher of industry newsletter Inside Mortgage Finance. "Now we aren't willing to give a mortgage to anybody but an Olympic athlete. Somewhere in between there's an appropriate balance."

Mortgage originations by U.S. banks were flat in the first quarter compared to the last three months of 2011 although they were up from a year earlier, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., a U.S. bank regulator.

Bankers, smarting from a $25 billion settlement over shoddy foreclosure practices, complain about uncertainty as regulators draw up new mortgage rules. The Federal Reserve said in April some community banks have given up on mortgages altogether.

But comments from major lenders Bank of America and Wells Fargo & Co suggest they could soon start beefing up lending again.

Bank of America Chief Executive Brian Moynihan told investors last week that his bank is adding loan officers as it looks to recover lost market share.

Wells Fargo, which now makes more than one in three U.S. mortgages, is also looking to grow.

"Now, we fully expect some bumping along here as the national economy has its own fits and starts and the like. But we see some real continued improvement," Mike Heid, head of Wells Fargo's mortgage unit, told investors last week.

Wells Fargo wrote $129 billion in mortgages in the first quarter, up from $120 billion in the fourth quarter and $84 billion a year earlier.

Still, demand has been far stronger from homeowners trying to bring down the cost of their existing mortgage than from prospective buyers. Last quarter, refinancing accounted for 76 percent of all mortgage applications.

Some of those who can buy are moving fast.

Twenty-six-year old John, who asked that his family name not be published, signed a contract on a three-bedroom property in Ponte Vedra, Florida, just a day after seeing it.

"There was another family that put in a bid on the same day, so we offered a little bit more than we were originally planning because we just wanted to get it off the market," he said.

WRITER'S NOTE: This post engendered a lot of empassioned responses. Some of the responses were directed at the question I posed; Others were directed at me.

I normally don't shy away from passionate responses: In fact, I feel that part of my job is to write about topics people care about enough to respond passionately to. And when I saw the response to the British test question I described below--the same question I posed here--I thought that this would be a question our readers might want to respond to as well.

(I had actually been thinking of asking this question for a while. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote an article about Goldman Sachs that led to the arrival of some of the anti-Semitic commenters who seem to be prevalent online. As I was deleting their comments, I thought, as I had before, "Where on earth does this stuff come from?")

As I said, the post was greeted with an empassioned response. Lots of the feedback, believe it or not, was positive: I was praised for starting a discussion on a sensitive topic. But lots of the response was also negative--as in, "What kind of an insensitive rockhead would ever ask a question like that?"

Some readers also felt that, if I was going to ask why some people hate Jews, I should also ask why some people hate blacks, Mormons, Christians, Muslims, and every other group that is occasionally subjected to hate. And I certainly could have asked those questions, too (If the commenters on my Goldman post and the British religious-studies exam had focused on Muslims, I might have asked that question first). One smart reader suggested that I just summarize all those questions by asking "Why do people hate?" And that was a reasonable question.

And then I got the feedback that clued me into the fact that I had crossed a line I hadn't intended to cross. Some people I like and respect told me they felt insulted by and uncomfortable with the post.

That did it.

Whatever interesting responses came from the post, I now regret writing it. (I'm okay making people feel uncomfortable about some topics, but not this one.)

I am very sorry to anyone I offended. I sincerely apologize.

Citizens in Britain were startled recently when a religious-studies exam featured the question, "why do some people hate Jews?"

The question was immediately blasted as inappropriate and quickly withdrawn.

But it's an interesting and important question.

Along with many other sites, this site is occasionally visited by people whose mission in life appears to be to express hatred of Jews. (We delete these comments as quickly as we can, but they're always startling in their venom, meanness, and stupidity.)

And hatred of Jews has obviously been an ongoing theme worldwide for centuries.

Hitler, for example, hated the Jews so much that he murdered 6 million people.

Why?

What is the source of this animosity? Why does it perpetuate itself? Where did this prejudice come from?

I'm asking this question seriously, and I'm going to Bleacher any comments that don't answer it seriously. As usual, I'm also going to ban any anti-Semitic commenters. And I'm only going to keep the comments open for 24 hours, because I know what will happen once I stop checking back in and reading them.

In the meantime, I'm genuinely mystified and curious, and I look forward to reading your responses.
