Less Than a Week Remains Before NASA's Biggest Rover Yet Lands on Mars

NASA's newest Mars rover is less than a week away from its high-stakes landing on the surface of the Red Planet.

The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover is scheduled to touch down on Mars at 10:30 p.m. PDT on Aug. 5 (1:30 a.m. Aug. 6 EDT, 0530 GMT). The car-size robotic explorer is designed to investigate whether Mars is, or ever was, capable of hosting microbial life.

With six days to go until Curiosity arrives at the Red Planet, project managers are bracing themselves for what NASA calls the riskiest part of the mission: the rover's harrowing descent through the Martian atmosphere to the ground.

John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, took part in a news briefing on July 16 to discuss the MSL mission. He called Curiosity's landing "risky business."

"The Curiosity landing is the hardest NASA robotic mission ever attempted in the history of exploration of Mars, or any of our robot exploration," Grunsfeld said.

When Curiosity reaches Mars, the 1-ton rover will be lowered to the surface by a rocket-powered sky crane. This complex contraption will help slow the spacecraft's speed from roughly 13,200 mph (about 21,250 kilometers per hour) to zero in only seven minutes. This sequence of events is officially known as entry, descent and landing, but its nail-biting nature has earned it the nickname "seven minutes of terror."

This type of unprecedented landing was selected because Curiosity is much larger than any previous rover that has been sent to the Red Planet. Curiosity's sheer size ruled out the possibility of orchestrating an airbag-assisted landing.

Once the rover's wheels touch down on the Martian surface, the sky crane will detach itself, fly off and land a safe distance away from Curiosity. [How Curiosity's Nail-Biting Landing Works (Pictures)]

The $2.5 billion rover will land in Gale Crater, where an enormous mountain called Mount Sharp rises from the center of the impact basin. As Curiosity treks around Gale Crater, and eventually climbs Mount Sharp, the rover will look for clues of past water activity in the region.

Mission scientists are also keen to see what Curiosity finds as it climbs Mount Sharp, where layers of rock have essentially preserved the planet's changing environmental conditions, stretching as far back as a billion years or more.

Curiosity is equipped with a suite of 10 instruments that will enable it to dig, take high-definition pictures, analyze chemical properties of Martian soil and rock samples, study minerals, and even shoot a laser at rocks to probe their chemical composition.

Israel's cabinet expected to approve austerity measures

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel's cabinet is expected to approve a controversial package of tax hikes and spending cuts aimed at reining in the budget deficit, which analysts say will give the central bank room to resume monetary easing to support a weakening economy.

The vote is slated for later on Monday although such discussions in the past have gone on into the night. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has received the backing of one of his coalition partners, Yisrael Beiteinu, but ministers from the ultra-Orthodox Shas party are likely to vote against the plan.

Israel's economy weathered the global economic crisis well until a year ago when exports began to slow as a result of a downturn in Europe and the United States - Israel's two largest trading partners. Exports account for about 40 percent of Israel's economic activity.

Israel forecasts economic growth of around 2.5 percent this year, slowing from 4.8 percent in 2011 and resulting in a tax revenue shortfall that will push the budget deficit closer to 4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). That would be well above an initial target of 2 percent.

The government last month opted to raise the 2013 deficit target to 3 percent of GDP from 1.5 percent, leading Bank of Israel chief Stanley Fischer to warn that interest rates may have to rise since fiscal loosening is inflationary.

The measures the cabinet will vote on include raising income taxes by 1 percent on those earning more than the average salary of 8,881 shekels ($2,198) a month starting in 2013. Taxes on salaries over 67,000 shekels a month will go up 2 percent. Income tax rates in Israel range between 10 and 48 percent.

Value added tax (VAT) is also set to rise to 17 percent from 16 percent, most ministries' budgets will be trimmed by 5 percent and the tax authority is targeting tax evaders to collect billions of shekels. Last week, Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz ordered immediate tax hikes on cigarettes and beer.

The Finance Ministry said the measures would add 14.4 billion shekels to state coffers next year.

ATTACK ON MIDDLE CLASS?

Netanyahu and Steinitz have defended the austerity steps as crucial to preventing the economy from deteriorating and requiring more severe measures.

"Governments that did not act in time, did not take determined action, and did not act responsibly, caused great harm to their people, both in terms of mass unemployment and in terms of crumbling social systems," Netanyahu said at the start of the cabinet meeting. "We will not allow that to happen ... We need to act responsibly."

Details of the plan have dominated the news, with commentators and opposition leaders criticizing the government for attacking the middle class at a time when the public has been protesting the high cost of living.

One of Netanyahu's few supporters is Fischer, who on Sunday called the fiscal steps "brave and essential" to improve Israel's budget situation.

"Due to Netanyahu's determination to act as soon as possible, in order to prevent Israel from sliding into a debt crisis, we believe now that the Bank of Israel will feel more comfortable to continue cutting rates in the near future," said Modi Shafrir, head of ILS Brokers, who forecasts cuts of up to another half-point by the end of 2012.

Last week, the Bank of Israel held its benchmark rate at 2.25 percent, after cutting it in June for the first time in five months, with some analysts citing concerns over the budget as a key reason for the central bank staying on hold.

"If progress is made towards improving fiscal prospects, the Bank of Israel will likely cut its base rate 25 basis points to 2.0 percent at its next meeting" on August 27, said Barclays Capital emerging markets economist Daniel Hewitt.

The Burgs Olympics series: Kayaking | TheBurgs: Community News ...

Posted July 28, 2012

Brad Buchanan, 41, of Blacksburg surfs in New River whitewater at McCoy Falls near the Montgomery/Giles County line. Matt Gentry | The Roanoke Times

The 2012 Summer Olympics kick off today in London.

Thousands of athletes from across the world will test their skills in sports such as diving, wrestling, track and field, volleyball and even badminton.

We turned to local athletes who specialize in these sports, asking them for tips and what to look for during the epic event.

CANOE SLALOM [Kayaking]

DESCRIPTION: Competitions consist of timed runs down a white water course with up to 25 gates. Red gates must be negotiated upstream, while green gates must be negotiated downstream. There are events for both canoes and kayaks. In canoe single (C1, for one person) and canoe double (C2, for two people) events, competitors kneel and use single-bladed paddles; in the Kayak event (K1), competitors sit and use paddles with blades at both ends.

HISTORY: Canoe Slalom made its debut at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games, but didn?t become a permanent part of the Olympic programme until Barcelona 1992.

COMPETITION DATES: Sunday-Aug. 2

LOCAL ATHLETE: Brad Buchanan, 41, Radford University outdoor recreation graduate and Montgomery County Parks Outdoor Education Supervisor

EXPERIENCE: Buchanan started kayaking in college and is an avid whitewater kayaker. He?s been teaching kayaking locally for 20 years.

Q: What do you like about the sport?

A: I like the aspect of the water moving under the boat and the freedom that a kayak gives you as far as maneuvering and getting out in nature and experiencing whitewater and the waves.

Q: What advice would you give to the Olympic kayak athletes?

A: Advise? Ha Ha..at that level they are pretty skilled in what they are doing?but with our local competition down here, it?s relax and do your own thing. Try and have fun and mellow out. I?ve noticed with whitewater kayaking and freestyle that if you get too amped up, it really throws you off. Having the ability to relax when you?re trying to do a maneuver or something like that really lets the boat flow allot easier.

Q: What should the average viewer be looking for while watching the sport on television?

A: In the slalom they will actually be competing in C-1 Canoes, it looks like a kayak, being a low volume stern, and the racy pointy ends, but they are actually kneeling down in the boat, they?re legs aren?t forward and they have a canoe paddle. But as far as the slalom goes, where they are going to make allot of their time up is when they are doing their turns into the gates. A certain maneuver racers use is called stern squirts, it?s when they take their upstream hip and drop the stern of their boat into the water and get the boat to pivot on an axis. The maneuver accelerates them through a turn.

Radical Muslims plan opening ceremony protest outside park

LONDON (Reuters) - A group of British Islamists said they had received permission to stage a protest on Friday outside the London Olympic Park to denounce what they called the evil of the Games.

The group, led by some of Britain's most prominent Islamist figures, said they would gather outside the gates to the park in Stratford before the opening ceremony to condemn Britain and other countries they accuse of persecuting Muslims.

They aim to attract the attention of 60,000 spectators due to attend the ceremony in the main Olympic stadium that officially opens the Games at 9 p.m.

The group has set up a website, evilolympics.com, which has the tagline "While the world plays, Muslims are being killed around the globe".

"It will be one of the biggest demonstrations that the Muslim community has put on in the UK," said organizer Mizanur Rahman said, estimating that "easily hundreds" would attend.

Rahman served a four-year jail term for encouraging followers to kill British and American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq during a protest in 2006.

Another organizer is Anjem Choudary, who has led numerous similar protests and threatened to disrupt last year's royal wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton until police banned the planned demonstration.

East London, where the Olympic Park is located, is home to a large Muslim community housed in some of the capital's poorest neighborhoods. It is also home to a number of British Muslims convicted of involvement in plots since the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

Rahman said they had been given permission by police to stage Friday's protest and added it would not be their last during the Games.

"Appropriate policing plans are in place," a spokeswoman for the London force said.

Rahman said the decision of judo chiefs not to allow a Saudi athlete to compete wearing an Islamic headscarf showed why Muslims should boycott the Olympics, which this year coincides with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

"I would hope that this would be a sign they should not be in the Games," said Rahman. (Editing by Sonya Hepinstall)

Effective Offline And Video Marketing For Freelancers - blog*spot

With many of your waking hours devoted on the internet, it's very likely that you are directing most your marketing initiatives on the internet, like video marketing, to advertise your business too. It is second nature and never a totally bad routine.

After all that is where the majority of your market is. But, as a freelancer, you should also gain from offline marketing and advertising gimmicks that have, continuously, proven themselves to make income. Here are some of the most effective.

Discuss your freelance business. The word of mouth strategy is yet to see the day when its appeal has lost its money-making power. For the moment though, it still ranks high among the most powerful advertising strategies there are. Moreover, word of mouth marketing is extremely affordable. You just need to develop ways to spread the word regarding your freelance business or service quickly and you can already create a base market and some new customers on the side. There are lots of ways to do this type of offline marketing. The most effective and the simplest would be to discreetly spread the word by speaking with people directly.

Whether you are at a coffee house, in a supermarket, a library or a hardware store, you can casually promote yourself as well as your freelance business. Expect to have no boom outside your local clients though because this kind of advertising seldom go nationwide. Except if you've used strategies which can pass on the word on the national level.

Perform some networking with some other freelancers. Creating your clientele by networking is definitely among the easiest to do both online and offline. In the internet, if you know a person who is in the exact same field as yours, make an effort to connect with him by means of professional networking sites. That easy. Exactly the same principle can be applied in an offline environment. That person you know may have heard another someone who's got lots of connections within your industry. Try to check into events and parties which may grow your network.

Advertise yourself and your products or services in free local newspapers and magazines. It's cheap and effective. You will likely have to pay some to have your advertisement placed on free newspapers and magazines, but whatever dollar you dole out will surely come back tenfold in the form of wider networking, new clients, and larger pool of potential clients.

Expand your advertising money to billboards as well as other signs. How often have you looked up a billboard or an advertisement sign and really have been made aware of a brand new company, product or service? If you can manage to post an advertisement through a billboard, you can broaden your market greatly. Offline marketing by means of billboards and signs may bring in new business to your online business. If you've got the cash to devote for this kind of advertising, you may as well use it.

Hand out your business cards. Nope, business cards have not died yet. Actually, they're a lot more effective nowadays than they were about ten years ago. While business cards can just contain info about your kind of business and some contact details, today these can also carry your website name, social networking addresses, and some other things which can aid in growing your network to several places.

Predicting Color Blindness, ADD, or Learning Disorders From Game Data

An anonymous reader tips a story at VentureBeat about a company that helps game developers analyze data gathered from their games to detect cheaters. But now, the company says this data can also be used to determine other traits of the players, like whether they're minors, or whether they like to gamble. Their CEO, Lukasz Twardowski, expects such analysis will soon be able to reveal even more traits, like whether a player is color blind, has a developmental disorder, or has Alzheimer's disease.
"'Games are the richest and the most meaningful form of human-computer interaction. ...By tracking how they play games, we can learn a lot about people,' Twardowski explained. Hesitatingly, he added: 'That will be a huge responsibility for us later on.' ... Academics have begun to take games more seriously, as a window into the human psyche. Games are addictive and immersive and are built to command hours of our time and attention. What better testbed for myriad psychological and medical conditions? A good game pushes us to our limits, challenging us to use both the analytical and intuitive sides of our brain.

The company also announced its acquisition of a five-story, 202,000-square-foot, Class A office building in Herndon, Va., for $49.6 million.

Plan unveiled to cut schools? energy use

The Maryland Energy Administration unveiled a $25 million plan to reduce the energy consumption of Maryland public school districts. The new green schools initiative is part of the Public Schools Capital Planning budget. The MEA expects to save more than $80 million during the life of the measures. The money is available to all Maryland public school districts through the MEA and the Maryland Public School Construction program. ?Greening Maryland?s schools with energy-efficient light bulbs and HVAC system upgrades will accelerate our progress towards Maryland?s Empower goal of reducing energy consumption 15 percent by 2015, and will provide long-term utility cost savings for schools,? said MEA Director Malcolm Woolf.

Amtrak proposes Union Station upgrade

(AP) Amtrak is proposing a $7 billion upgrade of the 105-year-old Union Station in Washington to turn it into a high-speed rail hub for the Northeast. The plan calls for doubling the number of trains the station can accommodate, the Washington Post reported. Amtrak would add new platforms, tracks and stores. Six tracks for high-speed rail would be added. There would also be a 50-foot-wide, 100-foot-long glass-enclosed main concourse. A developer is also planning a $1.5 billion complex of offices, residential towers and a hotel that would be built on a deck over the tracks. Amtrak has not said how the project would be funded.

Plan for new Hagerstown stadium advances

(AP) Hagerstown Mayor Robert Bruchey says the city is making ?great headway? toward construction of a downtown stadium to keep minor league baseball in the Western Maryland city. Bruchey said that there?s a ?better than 50-50? chance that the framework for a lease with the Hagerstown Suns will be ready by mid-August, the Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reported. Winchester, Va., is also courting the Suns, a Class-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Hagerstown and Washington County have committed $16 million toward a proposed $30 million stadium to replace 80-year-old Municipal Stadium, the Suns? home since 1981. The project also would require state and private funding.

Jay Carney Won?t Say Which City Is the Capital of Israel

White House spokesman Jay Carney refused to directly say which city is the capital of Israel during a press briefing Thursday, saying only ?our position has not changed.?

?I haven?t had that question in a while,? Carney said with a slight laugh when a reporter asked whether the Obama administration considers Jerusalem or Tel Aviv to be Israel?s capital. ?Our position has not changed.?

?What?s the capital?? the reporter repeated.

?You know our position,? Carney said.

The exchange grew somewhat heated when World Net Daily?s Lester Kinsolving interjected, ?She doesn?t know, that?s why she asked?she does not know, she just said she doesn?t know ? I don?t know!?

Carney still held firm, saying only, ?Our position hasn?t changed.?

A state department spokeswoman had a similar exchange with reporters back in March.

City Chatter Looks To Compete With Highlight, Sonar By Pairing Group Chat With Social Discovery

Screen shot 2012-07-26 at 12.50.59 PMYet another mobile social local app has entered the fray to compete with the likes of Highlight and the rest, and it's called City Chatter. The app is meant to be the "antisocial" network, according to the email pitch we received, though I'm not quite sure how that could be the case as one of the main features is group chat among those in your vicinity. It's actually rather Sonar-like, as users can check out profiles of those nearby before saying anything. You can then enter a public group chat for the area (like the cafe or park you're hanging out in), or enter into a private chat with someone nearby.

Markets steady as pressure on Spain eases

LONDON (AP) ? Global markets were steady Wednesday as the pressure on Spanish bonds eased after a leading European central banker suggested the continent's bailout fund could be reformed to give it more financial firepower.

Markets have been rattled over the past few days by fears that Spain, the eurozone's fourth-largest economy, could need a bailout along the lines of Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

Following three days of market losses, some investors returned to buy beaten-up stocks, though downbeat economic data and underwhelming earnings from Apple kept sentiment in check.

Sentiment was given a bit of a boost by a suggestion from European Central Bank policymaker Ewald Nowotny that the European Stability Mechanism, the eurozone's planned permanent bailout fund, could be given a banking license. That would give it the ability to borrow money from the ECB, increasing its financial resources.

Vassili Serebriakov, an analyst at Wells Fargo Bank, said such a move would be of particular significance for Spain and Italy as the current bailout fund does not have enough money to rescue them both.

"While some European policymakers have in the past spoken against the idea of a banking license, the recent rise in European bond yields is testing the tolerance levels of the European authorities, while prompting a search for policy options," said Serebriakov.

The biggest market gain was seen in Spain, where the main IBEX 35 index rose 0.8 percent. The country's borrowing rates also eased after hefty increases of the past few days. The 10-year yield was down 0.16 percentage points at 7.37 percent ? still way above the 7 percent rate considered to be unsustainable in the long-run.

Elsewhere in Europe, Germany's DAX rose 0.3 percent to 6,406.52 while the CAC-40 in France was 0.2 percent higher at 3,081.74. Britain's FTSE 100 index of leading British shares underperformed, trading 0.9 percent lower at 5,498.32 after official figures showed the country's economy shrank by a greater-than-anticipated quarterly rate of 0.7 percent in the second quarter.

The euro was faring better than in recent days, trading 0.5 percent higher at $1.2126. On Tuesday, it fell to a two-year low of $1.2052.

In the U.S., stock markets edged higher as investors brushed off weaker than expected earnings from Apple. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.3 percent at 12,655.62 but the broader S&P 500 index was 0.2 percent lower at 1,336.11.

The focus will likely remain on Europe's debt crisis over the coming days and in particular Spain and Greece.

The cost of bailing out Spain would potentially be twice the size of aid for Greece, Portugal and Ireland combined. This factor has raised questions over how long Europe's stronger economies will continue rescuing the weaker ones.

Germany's Ifo survey of business sentiment fell for a third consecutive month in July, adding to concerns over the state of Europe's largest economy. This follows Moody's announcement earlier this week that the country's credit rating was under pressure by the crisis enveloping Europe.

Some officials in Berlin have called for allowing Greece to leave the euro to keep it from hurting Germany. Investors think such an exit could happen soon if Greece's international debt inspectors conclude that little progress has been made in reforming the country's economy.

Another worry in the markets heading into August, when liquidity levels are low, is that price movements could be exaggerated, in much the same way as they were last year. That could make matters worse in Europe crisis resolution effort.

"If liquidity dries up moving into August, prices are open to being driven by much less than in normal conditions, compounding fears of volatility," said David White, a trader at Spreadex.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average closed down 1.4 percent at 8,365.90 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 0.1 percent to 18,877.33. The Shanghai Composite slipped 0.5 percent to 2,136.15.

Oil prices were steady with benchmark crude for September delivery down $1.41 at $87.09 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Flu - Home Remedies | Revista Women's Health

The flu or the common cold is usually a very complicated disease but not really upset associated with nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy throat, mild cough, and fever. Because influenza is a very old disease, home remedies for it abound.

There are many resources that can be used to relieve the common cold, as the application of mustard plasters to the chest, or the use of garlic, although specialized tests have proven that they are not effective and have since been discarded.

Current resources of flu remedies vary in effectiveness. For years, it has been believed that the intake of vitamin C and echinacea can reduce the duration of the flu or prevent troublesome constipation. Recent studies suggest that none of these supplements is very helpful in curing or preventing the flu and its symptoms.

By contrast, zinc intake, which is another supplement, it has been shown to reduce discomfort days. Zinc can cause some people develop diarrhea or severe stomach pain, however, must prove that there is sensitivity with a small amount of zinc. If the cure is worse than the disease, the zinc should be avoided radically.

One of the classic remedies for the flu is chicken soup. Scientists speculate that chicken soup can be effective due to its combination of salt, fluids and proteins. It can also help stimulate the body when it feels heavy for the discomfort. In most cases, a homemade chicken soup for canning is preferable because it has a lower sodium content.

On the other hand, many people try to relieve cold with decongestants or cough suppressants like syrup. Antihistamines such as benadryl can also be useful, but that cause drowsiness.

One of the simplest decongestants can make at home with nasal saline drops are made with a combination of salt and water, this may help clear the nose, congestion but usually returns. However, doctors recommend these drops for those who are more prone to infections such as sinusitis.

A less invasive method to help clear blocked nose during flu is taking a hot bath. In addition, humidifiers or vaporizers can help reduce the congestion that can be complicated by dry air.

Young children, who often respond well to decongestants, can find an excellent tool to fight the flu with these steam baths. Just sit in a bathroom with the shower running. Using a humidifier at night can also help reduce the incidence and the various symptoms of the flu.

Honey is a cough suppressant and very effective for use during the flu or several episodes of bronchitis. Honey should not be given to children under one year, because this substance contains the spores of botulism, a disease that strikes children easily.

Most doctors believe that fluid intake is very important when you have the flu. Fluid intake should include at least six to eight glasses of water, herbal tea or juice a day. Also, limit intake of caffeine, as this drink actually dehydrates the body and causes the flu last longer.

Another method that can be useful to temporarily relieve congestion is to apply warm compresses to the face on both sides of the nose. The hot packs can help relieve congestion. One must be careful to leave very hot towel, especially when used on sensitive skin of young children. This treatment for the flu usually lasts only while applying the compresses.

Almost everyone knows or has certain any home remedies to treat flu, in many cases is taken from inheritance previous generations. When considering the use of a family tradition, make sure the treatment is by no means dangerous to health.

There is a common practice in the application of menthol in the nose, for example, this method can be dangerous for young children. As with the treatment of any disease, common sense and medical advice should be necessary.

A Primer on Health Insurance Plans

kel0kkh9to Posted by kel0kkh9to on 1 hour ago

Each day, worldwide, people fall ill, wind up in a mishap, or perhaps inadvertently hurt themselves. The average person will have been sick or will probably have suffered through a medical disaster at some point of his life ? who hasn?t? Yes, it?s a part of life to fall ill; however, it?s how you will recover that counts. With this, health insurance plans can help you.

Health insurance can be your safety net once you fall ill, and if you get the right kind, you, plus your family, won?t have to worry about getting sick ever again.

Health insurance has been around for quite some time now. As reported by the ?Fundamentals of Health Insurance: Part A? authored by the Health Insurance Association of America, the precursor of the current medical care insurance system came from the Franklin Health Assurance Company. This was a type of accident insurance, which offered policy cover for just about any injury incurred in railroad and steamboat collisions. During that time, everyone was required to pay for medical costs and procedures using the money in their pockets. No money, no service in case the medical professional was cruel. The first portion of the twentieth century gave rise to the modern-day model of healthcare as we know it today.

At the moment, there are two main sorts of medical insurance people can get. One is through health care insurance funded by the government by means of institutions which include Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare. The other one is by private and cheap health insurance for individuals. At this time, a lot of people in the United States get their medical care via private providers. To get public health care insurance similar to Medicare, an individual has in order to meet specified passing criteria. As per the U.S. Census Bureau, about 27.8% of the total population is included by these government programs.

The United States pays twice as much as any other nation on medical care per capita, but yet falls behind on other affluent nations around the world with regards to infant mortality and life-span, as described by the World Health Organization. Healthcare and health care insurance can be extremely costly. When searching for a method to decrease your fears and feel secured in terms of your wellbeing, a way of achieving this is thru finding private but cheap health insurance for individuals. There are numerous kinds of vendors of private health insurance plans out there that may cover you but won?t hit you up for an arm and a leg.

These offer full coverage plans to medical care insurance packages for your needs and your capacity to pay. Private medical care insurance providers will offer packages including inexpensive individual medical insurance, family medical insurance, company health care insurance, and more. For those within a strict budget, there are ?bare bones? cheap health insurance for individuals that can be obtained within a comparatively cheap price. These packages will be more designed for young and healthy folks who need to have some type of medical insurance, which is better than nothing at all.

Private medical care insurance can supply you with peace of mind, the capacity to exist and not be worried about your overall health every minute that you are alive. That in itself is priceless.

Second Outline: Intimacy and Sexual Fluidity Within Prisons ...

Introduction

Official prison records identify 19% of inmates as homosexual (Ward, Kassebaum 160). Yet, surveys of prison staff would suggest that, ??between 30 and 70% of inmates have affairs while in prison? (Ward, Kassebaum 166). Therefore, the primary focus of this paper will be to study the impact that being sent to prison has on the sexuality of its inmates. Prisons provide a unique environment from which we can study sexuality and how, or to what extent, it can be shaped by society, because of the confined space in which inmates interact. ?The bases for prisoner behavior are now seen to be the kinds of deprivation, limitations and hardships posed by confinement, coupled with the pre-prison backgrounds of the inmates? (Ward, Kassebaum 160). The typical sexual narrative that then comes out of prisons is that of ?switching teams?. For instance a man, or woman, who at one point was straight, is led to seek out a same sex partner over the course of their incarceration. Is this person gay? Straight? Or bisexual? What if they identify themselves straight, but sleep with someone of the same

The sex-research community has largely ignored sexuality in prisons. But, interest in inmate sexuality has increased since the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003, not just concerning victimization, but all aspects of sexuality. A biological emphasis on sexuality would suggest that it is determined at birth. Sexuality is therefore something that is set. People are born into their sexuality. While, this appears to be the case, given that people do not typically switch whom they are attracted to on a dime, there are studies of inmates? experiences that point to sexuality being more fluid.

Literature Review:

Prison subcultures evolve to meet specific needs of the inmates, whether they are physical or emotional. For instance, many inmates are afraid upon their initial arrival; they are afraid of being mistreated by other prisoners, or by the staff, and whether or not they will ever see their family again. And the frustration at feeling separated from one?s family or friends doesn?t dissipate over time (Ward, Kassebaum 162). Forming different partnerships exists as a mode of survival. The extent to which men and women form these relationships may depend on different sex roles already developed by society, or their physical and social standings within the prison. Therefore, part of understanding homosexuality and sexual fluidity within this confined environment involves comparing and contrasting female and male institutions.

According to Ward and Kassebaum, ?emotional deprivation and lack of experience in fending for oneself combine in the women?s prison to promote?homosexual involvement? (Ward, Kassebaum 166). This is in comparison to how sociologist once characterized homosexual relationships in prison as only acts of deviancy, or the acts of hardened, jaded criminals who were waiting to take advantage of new inmates (Kunzel 115). But, what was once viewed as childish, or acting upon a type of crush is now viewed in terms of real relationships. Showing that there is a far greater range in activities and the expression of sexuality in prison than was once thought. There are also distinctions made between those who are ?true? homosexuals and ?jailhouse turn-outs? (those who typically return to heterosexual relationships after prison). In both male and female institutions there appear to be pressures to ?turn-out?, as well as adhere to designated social, and sexual roles (such as the existence of an?aggressive, ?masculine? partner). For instance, Gibson?s work describes power relationships in which sex is used as a form of control, or to obtain a ?reward? (higher standing in the prison hierarchy). In other words, prisoners ?redefine their outward identities in an attempt to fit into the prison society without becoming victims themselves? (Gibson 19). To what extent this is true may vary across institutions, gender, and time, which reflected by Kunzel?s writings, allowing for a more historical view from which the articles by Gibson, Ward and Kassebaum may function.

Moving Forward:

The arguments raised by this paper reflect a much more generalized question, which is: to what extent do social circumstances shape one?s sexuality? And, how does this vary across male and female correctional facilities?
