Okay, more hardware, I think. There are loads of ?How To Build A PC? features out there, but it strikes me that, given the amount of experience, expertise and opinion that there is in the RPS comment threads, we can probably come to a rough sort of consensus on a recommended gaming hardware setup for a modern PC. I?ll make some inexpert suggestions below, then you lot can comment, and we?ll perhaps even come up with a few builds at different prices? Everyone up for that?

I?ll edit this article as we go along, so we can try and come up with something roughly definitive. Okay ? GO!

Right, so if I was buying bits for a new PC I?d probably look for a spec like this:

• Intel? Core? i5-2500K Processor. You can probably pick that up for under ?170. They?re a piece of piss to overclock, since it?s just a case of fiddling with the bios settings a bit. Getting them up over 4Ghz can be done in a couple of minutes by someone with no understanding of what they?re doing (ie: me).
• Then we?d need a motherboard to slot that into. I know fuck all about motherboards, but I reckon something like the Asus P8P67 should do the job. These seem to be just under ?80, and so probably not the cheapest possible option, but certain one with a bunch of options in terms of how you set it up. If I remember correctly there was some kind of recall on chipsets of this type, but it was such a minor thing that it wasn?t worth panicking, and the issue might actually be fixed by now. (Anyone know more about that? My cursory Googling didn?t unearth anything useful.)
• Motherboard on-board sound remains crappy, I believe. I got a free USB soundcard with my headphones, and it?s blatantly better than the on-board sound on my motherboard. Terrible, but true. I have literally no idea what a good soundcard solution actually is these days, mind. I am open to suggestions on that.

I am not sure there?s a significant performance difference between the various clockspeeds and channel numbers, but there must be some difference, given the amount of extra cash you could spend on this. Any memory experts want to pick out relevant points?
• The graphics card solution is going to be one people will debate, I suspect. I?m using the Palit GTX 560 Ti 2GB. Which cost me ?199, not the ?148 I thought in the graphics card thread. Oops.
• Storage! Oof. Well I think an SSD with Windows and apps on is the way to go, personally, with a large secondary storage old-school hard-drive for game installs. But if you were going for cheap then a standard HD at about 1TB is ?70. I think I bought this one for my Dad?s Frankenstein?s monster of a PC, and that seems to work ok.

And the company said it reserved the right to sell that information to third-party marketers or even government and law enforcement agencies.

New York?s powerful Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer termed the move a ?brazen? invasion of privacy and called for an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission.?Facing mounting criticism from other government and private quarters, OnStar said it has canceled its policy change and will not maintain a link to customers who quit the service.

?We realize that our proposed amendments did not satisfy our subscribers,? said OnStar President Linda Marshall in a prepared statement. ?This is why we are leaving the decision in our customers? hands. We listened, we responded and we hope to maintain the trust of our more than 6 million customers.?

?The company continued to defend its initial plans, insisting they would have given OnStar the ability to send emergency messages to even those no longer subscribing to the service in the event, it suggested, of a tornado or other serious storm.

Going forward, Marshall noted, a link will be maintained only if a customer opts in voluntarily.? And then, OnStar would ?honor customer references? as to how it might use any data it collects.

The company notably did not say it would reverse its plans to be able to sell data collected from existing subscribers, however.? The GM unit could track a vehicle?s speed, for example, as well as its location.? ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) ? The Tampa Bay Rays clinched the AL wild card with a stunning rally Wednesday night, overcoming a late seven-run deficit and then beating the New York Yankees 8-7 on Evan Longoria's home run in the 12th inning.

The Rays' win came four minutes after Boston blew a one-run lead in the ninth at Baltimore and lost 4-3, causing a roar at Tropicana Field.

The Red Sox, who held a nine-game lead over the Rays in early September, and Tampa Bay began the final day of the regular season tied for the wild card.

Longoria hit a three-run homer in the eighth that capped a six-run burst. Pinch-hitter Dan Johnson's two-out, two-strike solo homer in the ninth tied it for Tampa Bay.

Longoria won it with a one-out shot barely inside the left-field foul pole, finishing the comeback from a 7-0 margin.

Tampa Bay will open its best-of-five playoff matchup at Texas on Friday. The Yankees will host Detroit in Game 1 Friday night.

Longoria connected off Scott Proctor (0-3) to end it. Proctor was the Yankees' 11th pitcher of the game ? they did not use all-time career saves leader Mariano Rivera, and Johnson hit his tying shot off Cory Wade.

The Yankees pulled their regulars throughout the game and finished with a lineup that looked more like a Triple-A team.

Moments before Tampa Bay won, it looked as if Boston would instead be going to the playoffs.

The Orioles were down to their last strike in the ninth before scoring twice off Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon.

The Rays, meanwhile, escaped a first-and-third, no-out jam in the 12th. Longoria made the key play, fielding a grounder at third and making a snap tag to catch the runner diving back to the back.

Mark Teixeira hit a grand slam off All-Star David Price and a solo homer as the Yankees built their big lead. The Rays sputtered against a parade of New York pitchers, until the eighth. Longoria homered off Luis Ayala to pull Tampa Bay within a run.

Teixeira's second-inning slam put the Yankees ahead 5-0. His solo shot made it 6-0 and came simultaneously as Dustin Pedroia went deep for Boston to give the Red Sox a 3-2 lead in their game. The Rays began cutting into their deficit during a rain delay in Baltimore.

A night after Matt Joyce's three-run homer gave Tampa Bay a 5-3 victory that kept the wild-card race tied, a crowd of 29,518 didn't have much to cheer until the eighth when the Rays loaded the bases with no outs against Boone Logan.

Ayala replaced Logan and walked pinch hitter Sam Fuld to force in one run, then hit Sean Rodriguez with a pitch to force in another. B.J. Upton's sacrifice fly trimmed Tampa Bay's deficit to 7-3 before Longoria connected.

Before the eighth, the Rays were limited to two hits ? a pair of singles by Casey Kotchman ? by a continuous stream of Yankees pitchers, beginning with a two-inning stint by rookie Dellin Betances.

George Kontos, Aaron Laffey, Phil Hughes, Raul Valdes, A.J. Burnett, Andrew Brackman, Logan, Ayala, Wade and Procter followed Betances, who made his first major league start.

"Our findings make intuitive sense," says lead author Thomas Coyle, who conducted the study with David Pillow, Anissa Snyder, and Peter Kochunov. But this is the first time psychologists have been able to confirm this important connection. The study appears in the forthcoming issue of Psychological Science, a journal published by the Association for Psychological Science.

"Our research was based on two well-known findings, Coyle continues. "The first is that performance on intelligence tests increases during adolescence. The second is that processing speed" -- the brain taking in and using new stimuli or information -- "as measured by tests of mental speed also increases during adolescence."

To find the relationship between these two phenomena, the UTSA psychologists analyzed the results of 12 diverse intelligence and mental speed tests administered to 6,969 adolescents (ages 13 to 17) in the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. Intelligence was measured by performance on cognitive tests of diverse abilities, such as vocabulary knowledge, math facts, and mechanical comprehension. Mental speed showed up in timed tests of computing and coding -- matching digits and words and other arithmetic tasks.

In both of these categories, the researchers could see that the older teenagers did better and worked faster than the younger ones. Then, running the data in numerous ways, they discovered that the measured increase of intelligence could be accounted for almost entirely by the increase in mental speed.

This is what they expected to find, says Coyle. After all, "performance on intelligence tests reflects, in part, the speed of acquiring knowledge, learning things, and solving problems." Those cognitive processes, he says, are related to how fast the brain is working -- and all that improves during the teenage years.

The work reinforces earlier theories about the relationship between increasing processing speed in the maturing brain and the cognitive development of children.

Canada: Apache Expects Kitimat LNG ... - LNG World News

There are still a few hurdles to clear, but Apache Canada president Tim Wall is betting construction on the KM LNG plant will start in mid-2012.

And in the meantime prep work on the Beese Cove site will continue so that ?we?ll be ready whenever our construction crews are ready.?

Wall was in Kitimat Thursday for an open house on the proposed liquefied natural gas plant project and visited Beese Cove prior to the event.

?It?s going to take us a while to work that site and get it right, but it was good to get started now,? he said.

While there would be a bit of blasting to do, he said that was to be expected with a site like that.

Saying work on the access road was progressing well, Wall added, ?The guys are working to shore up the road and then they?ll hopefully finish off that last piece of road where the washout is.?

Wall said there were about 25-30 people working on the site that day, a lot of them locals, ?and they were getting a lot done today, that?s for sure.?

While weather was obviously increasingly going to be a factor, he conceded that it would likely slow progress but said the company would still be trying to get things done even after it turns wintery.

When it was pointed out that the company was spending a lot of money on something that hadn?t even received board approval yet, Wall laughed: ?We?re pretty confident, it?s a good project.?

He added he hoped to have that approval ? called the final investment decision (FID) ? by the first or second quarter of next year.

However, there are still a few items to get out of the way before that happens.

First, there is the front-end engineering and design (FEED) study to complete. Wall said that is going ?very well? and is on track to be finished in January or February.

Then there are the contracts with Asian buyers ? target markets include China, Korea and Japan ? to negotiate and get signed off.

Wall said a lot of memorandums of understanding had already been reached with potential buyers.

And most importantly the company had to receive an export to licence natural gas from the National Energy Board because obviously buyers are not going to sign a contract until they see that.

?Once we get those pinned down?then we?ll be ready to go and get the boards? approval.?

The boards in question are those of Apache, EOG Resources? and Encana, the three partners in the project and its accompanying natural gas supply pipeline from Summit Lake to Kitimat.

Given the high price of LNG in Asia and the low price of natural gas here, Wall said, ?It looks good and, from what we can tell from customers, the demand is definitely there.?

In fact, he believes the demand is such that KM LNG could go for expansion, what?s called ?the second train?. (Each train would produce five million tonnes of LNG per year).

?That?s just more jobs and more investment for the area, so it?s a good story,? he said of the expansion.

On LNG export in general, Wall noted Canada had huge natural gas resources but its only customer was the Units States, ?and they are, at the best of time times, volatile in the way they buy and sell.?

Pointing out LNG contracts were typically 20-year deals, he added, ?You?ve got that long-term, stable export and I don?t know how Canada can lose on that.?

In the same vein, diversifying the customer base gave Canada the potential to become a major player in global LNG which would ?do wonders for the economy, Canada, BC, everybody.?

While there are a number of other companies looking to export LNG from Canada to Asia, Wall says he?s not concerned.

?I think there?s enough market space for a lot of different projects here, whoever it is. We can all do well exporting LNG from Canada.?

Wall added he regarded Australia, not other Canadian exporters as his main competitor.

French ambassador attacked in Syria

PARIS (AP) ? A group of Syrians threw eggs and stones at France's ambassador to Syria on Saturday as he left a meeting in Damascus with a Greek Orthodox patriarch, an official said.

No injuries were reported to Ambassador Eric Chevallier, his aides or the patriarch, Ignatius IV, according to the diplomatic official in Paris.

Chevallier has had several confrontations with pro-government activists in Syria as his government and the European Union demand that Syrian President Bashar Assad end his government's violent crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators there.

The French diplomatic official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers ? who included men and women ? also were armed with iron bars but did not appear to use them.

Syria has come under withering international criticism for its crackdown on protests, straining relations with embassies in Damascus.

On July 7 and 8, U.S. Ambassador Robert Ford and Chevallier traveled to Hama, Syria, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) north of the capital, in separate trips to express support for the Syrian people to demonstrate peacefully.

Hama residents told The Associated Press that the visits helped prevent attacks by security forces. But the regime seized on the visit to insist that foreign conspirators are behind the unrest, not true reform-seekers. Within hours of the visit being made public, regime supporters attacked the U.S. and French embassies in Damascus, smashing windows and painting graffiti.

Three French Embassy workers were injured.

A little Space like Home: A Scrapbook for Someone Special

I love to scrapbook.

I also think it's a lovely way to make someone feel loved, valued, worthy.

I've used scrap booking in many different forms to give someone a sentimental gift, for the 30th, 50th.

But most recently I've made a scrapbook for someone simply to say, thank you for being such a great friend.

Even though they live interstate, I was skillful enough to rummage through their photos and scan a collection of memorable shots, without them even knowing.

This someone, I know they read my blog, not daily, but adhoc.? So if you're reading this, maybe this post is about you.

And if you're reading this and the baby in the pictures above looks familiar, well you can expect a little parcel from the postman in the next 24 hours.

I was hoping to have this ready for this person's birthday on the weekend, but I was a little behind schedule.

But really, it's not a birthday present anyway, it's a just because present.

I've filled this album with gorgeous shots, not just of this someone, but of photos of them, with all the special someones in their life.? Precious moments caught in time that I hope will remind them of a good life lived so far and the prospects of exciting things to come.

Telling someone their valued, or important to you, doesn't have to involve a scrapbook.? It may be as simple as taking them to the movies, dropping around a handful of magazines if they need to put their feet up, or perhaps even a telephone call.

Have you told anyone recently that they are important in your life, and that you value their friendship?

Dish Network's New Streaming Service Unveiled (Mashable)

Dish Network announced its rumored Netflix/Qwickster competitor at a press conference Friday. The service, Dish Network with BlockBuster Movie Pass, is not a direct Netflix competitor per se. Instead, it's a $10 monthly add-on for existing Dish Network subscribers that will ofer them access to DVD and Blu-ray -- as well as video game -- rentals by mail, along with access to streaming movies and TV shows. It will debut on Oct. 1 and be accompanied by a big advertising campaign.

In other words, this is a mashup of BlockBuster's existing mail and online services with Dish Network's current video-on-demand service. For Dish Network subscribers, this is a great deal. But we're scratching our heads to find the value for everyone else.

Dish does say it has plans to offer services for non-Dish Network subscribers. However, in its initial state, the BlockBuster Movie Pass bundle will only be available to 14 million Dish Network customers. These customers will need to have an IP-enabled receiver to access content.

Where Are the Connected Devices and Apps?

On paper, the Dish/BlockBuster deal looks good, especially for existing Dish customers. What concerns us, however, is the lack of focused on third-party connected devices like set-top boxes, Blu-ray players and tablets like the iPad.

Dish has various offerings on the iPad and BlockBuster has dabbled with getting support on select mobile and connected devices. However, it was clear the folks at Dish Network haven't figured out or finalized their strategy in regards to connectivity.

Assuming Dish can extend its current iPad functionality to include access to the new streaming content, the company will be on the right track. Still, we think it's essential any company launching a subscription streaming program focus on the connected device market.

For instance, Dish could take a queue from its competitor DirecTV and look at making some of its services available on game consoles like the PS3.

This Isn't a Threat to Netflix

As dissatisfied with Netflix/Qwickster as customers may be, this new Dish/BlockBuster offering isn't a real threat to its separate offerings.

The requirement to be a Dish subscriber, deal with their installers and equipment, and pay their fees is going to be a deal-breaker for most potential customers. Let's face it, not everyone wants a dish.

Moreover, the streaming component seems to be a largely rebranded version of Dish's existing video-on-demand offering. Plus, while the rent by mail option is nice, it sort of misses the point of what has made Netflix so great.

We also think the people at Dish Network are greatly overvaluing the importance of the BlockBuster brand. While everyone knows BlockBuster, it doesn't mean all consumers like or trust the brand.

The real news from this announcement is that this is the first bundling of an over-the-top (meaning, delivered by IP) streaming solution alongside a traditional content delivery play. Comcast and other cable companies have been investing heavily in TV Everywhere, but thus far, those solutions have largely been network dependent. HBO Go, the most successful TV Everywhere execution to date, is an HBO product, not a Comcast product.

Our hope is this move will entice other cable and satellite providers to consider bundling or enhancing their over-the-top offerings alongside the typical television content.

My Thoughts:

I couldn?t resist the description of this YA title when it was offered by Simon and Schuster, a vampire gets staked by a unicorn and develops a conscience ? what?s not to love? Drink, Slay, Love is a fun, quirky story with surprising wit.
Sixteen year old vampire Pearl Sange is stunned when the pretty sparkly unicorn stakes her with his horn in the alley behind the ice cream store and even more surprised when she wakes on the sofa at home, her Family peering down at her. Her chest is sore and she is a little confused but it isn?t until she is caught by a pair of wannabee hunters and forced to face the sunrise that she discovers she is now immune to daylight. Pearl is dazzled by the day, the way light streams through stained glass windows, but is less impressed by the crush of humanity. Her parents see Pearl?s unique ability as the perfect opportunity to gather the bodies they need to provide sustenance at the impending Feast in honor of the Vampire King, so Pearl is made to attend high school. But daywalking isn?t the only side effect of the unicorns attack, Pearl is beginning to see humans as more than food and handing over the entire Junior year as the main course no longer seems to be such a good idea.
It?s brave of Durst to step away from the mold and combine vampires with vampire slaying were unicorns, but I think it works in Drink, Slay, Love because she doesn?t discard the traditional mythology completely. This isn?t a story to take seriously, it is generously sprinkled with humour and blissfully free of melodramatic teenage angst. It?s a lighthearted YA novel with snappy dialogue and delightful attitude.
The characters might be just a touch shallow but they are fun. Pearl is smart, snarky and fierce, and even as her allegiance transitions from her Family to her friends she doesn?t lose that core of moxie (for want of a better word). Durst manages to combine characters that represent every highschool clique ? from the geeky Zeke and Matt to mean girl?s Ashlyn and Tara. Evan has his own secret to keep of course but is a sweetie, I like that the relationship between Evan and Pearl is low key.
Durst cleverly gives a nod to the (legions) of adult YA fans with her references to 1980?s teen movies classics Pretty In Pink and the Breakfast Club. For her more age appropriate readership, their are some less than subtle digs at the Twilight Saga.
Drink, Slay ,Love was much better than I had expected and I enjoy being surprised by a book. Amusing, clever and fresh its the perfect read for girls that once loved ponies and now swoon over brooding vamps.

Rick Santorum Pissed About What Comes Up When You Google Rick Santorum

Republican Presidential "candidate" (term used very, very loosely) Rick Santorum is at odds with not only his fellow White House hopefuls, but Google.

Specifically, Rick is far from pleased about the results displayed when people type his name into the search engine. All 12 of those people? So misled!

Hilariously, the first result on a search for his name is not his website, but a fake definition of "santorum," a graphically described sexual act/byproduct.

Go Google Rick Santorum right now if you want the definition. We're not going to spell it out here, but let's just say it stinks worse than his poll numbers.

Ironically, more people are undoubtedly doing this now than because they cared about Santorum initially. Maybe you should be thanking them, R-Dog.

The former U.S. Senator attacked Google, going so far as to suggest that if he were a Democrat, the company would rectify this atrocity immediately.

Santorum told Politico in an interview this week that “I suspect if something was up there like that about, say, Joe Biden, they would get rid of it."

On Wednesday, October 20, 2010, Full Sail University (fullsail.edu) welcomed 2003 Film graduate and Head of Entertainment Development at Union Editorial, Noah Haeussner, to its Full Sail Live venue for an exclusive student and staff screening of the upcoming feature film, The Inventor: Story of Robert Axle, starring Kevin Spacey.

This comedic drama follows the tale of an eccentric inventor that gains wealth and fame, but finds unexpected misfortune. After many hardships he is ready to redeem his name and rebuild his billion-dollar empire.
